Yes, the problem with futures markets is there's no useful open/close of day since it's a continuous market. At least ES tracks stocks which have a definite open/close time. I think a good way to detect "open of day" for any market is when the volume first spikes the most after overnight hours. And then use the time when volume again spikes and dies off drastically as the close.
