Hi, As Al suggested that most traders(especially new traders), should swing trade, but TR is not good for swing TR, and there are 90% times are TR as show in Al's Other classes. Thus, if we swing trade, we can only trade 10% of the times, is it right?
Not necessarily, an intraday swing trade is defined as one where the reward is at least 2x the risk (for simplicity's sake I'm just talking about initial risk - using actual risk can increase the number of opportunities though). If the range is broad enough for you to structure such a trade, then it may be possible to take swing trades even when entering on a stop. That being said, if the range is broad but the bars have poor follow through (i.e. entering on stops has a low probability of success, at least not without a significant pullback), then it may be more of a limit order market and it can be more difficult to find swing trades. In that sort of a market if you do enter with a stop and use 2x initial risk for your target, the target may be so far away that it's unrealistic to think that the market will get to that point. Plus if the directional conviction is so low that the bars don't even have good follow-through that makes a far target a lower probability bet. This is because higher prices will tend to shut off buying and lower prices will tend to shut off selling, meaning that it will tend to be harder to entice new business as prices become less favorable. All that is to say that the presence of a trading range does not preclude the possibility of a swing trade, however whether one should be taken or not depends on the nature of the trading range.
Also, just to clarify, Dr. Brooks says that the market is in a strong breakout on approximately 10% of any chart, 90% of the time it is in either a trading range or a channel. There can be numerous opportunities to take swing trades in channels.
